Small but very effective moves transformed an inefficient inner suburban house into a functional, comfortable, energy-smart, and affordable home within its existing footprint by simply moving away from the rigid “one room, one function” mindset.

This ultimately leads to homes that are not only more adaptable but also more sustainable.

As climate change reshapes how we design living spaces, the traditional Western model of dedicated rooms for specific functions is increasingly unsustainable.

Conventional homes demand more materials, energy, and land to support rigid layouts, driving resource depletion and higher carbon footprints. In contrast, adaptable, multi-functional spaces maximize utility while minimizing built area, reducing material waste and energy use—key to climate-conscious design.

This project prioritizes experience-driven architecture: the plan defines the home, thermal comfort follows, and details refine the vision.
