The new structure, behind the two apartment blocks, was designed to complement the existing art deco buildings that are central to the neighbourhood character. The scale and form match the existing buildings and for the facade we opted for a contemporary interpretation of characteristic elements of the art deco facade. The planning approval for this design was delivered promptly, a clear indication that concept was widely embraced by neighbours.
This apartment building is a modern addition to a heritage listed residential complex in East Melbourne. The block itself and the surrounding land were already densely built on, together with heritage constraints leaving little scope to develop the site.
